How to record a lecture hall
Lecture theatres are the hardest ordinary audio there is: a distant speaker, hard surfaces, and a hundred people shifting in their seats. Four things change the result more than any software setting:
- Sit closer. Three rows forward is worth more than any app.
- Phone flat on the desk, microphone unobstructed. Not in a bag, not under a notebook.
- Record audio, not video. Same transcript, a fraction of the file size, and the limit is 500MB.
- Start before the lecture does. The first two minutes usually contain the exam-relevant admin.
Ask first
Recording a lecture you are attending is a conversation you are part of, but a lecturer's teaching is also their work, and many institutions have their own rules about recording and sharing. Ask before the first recording, and do not redistribute a lecturer's material. A private study copy and a file shared around a year group are not the same thing.
